BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

WRITER: Michael Shay's fiction and essays have been published in Northern Lights, High Plains Literary Review, Colorado Review, Owen Wister Review, Visions, High Plains Register, and "In Short," a Norton anthology of brief creative nonfiction. His book of short fiction, "The Weight of a Body," was published by Ghost Road Press in April 2006. Michael was co-editor of the Wyoming Center for the Book's 2003 anthology, "Deep West: A Literary Tour of Wyoming." He received a fellowship from the Jentel Foundation for a summer 2006 residency. Michael has read his work in venues throughout Wyoming, and in Colorado, Texas, South Dakota, Florida, Michigan, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.

BLOGGER: Michael launched his personal blog, hummingbirdminds, in 2005. It focuses on Wyoming progressive politics, but wanders off-topic just as much, as eclectic as the title implies. The Democratic Party chose Hummingbirdminds as the Wyomning state blog for the 2008 national convention in Denver. Michael also edits the Wyoming Arts Council blog.

ARTS ADMINISTRATOR: Michael Shay is individual arts specialist for the Wyoming Arts Council. He is a past board member for the Wyoming Center for the Book and is on the coordinating committee for the Cheyenne YMCA's Writer's Voice Project. He has served as a literary panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, and state arts agencies in Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Nebraska, Ohio, and Kentucky. He is on the planning committee for the Equality State Book Festival, held every two years in Casper, Wyo. From 1993-95, he served as assistant director for the National Endowment for the Arts literature program in Washington, D.C.

TEACHER: A Colorado native, Michael has an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Colorado State University (1992) and a B.A. in English from the University of Florida (1976). He has taught writing at Colorado State University, University of Wyoming, Aims Community College, Laramie County Community College, and F.E. Warren AFB. He also has taught writing classes to teachers through the Wyoming Writing Project. In August 2006, he conducted a workshop in Grand Teton National Park.

COMMUNITY: Michael has served on the board for UPLIFT, the Wyoming chapter of the Federation of Families for Childrens Mental Health, since 1998. He has served as secretary for the Laramie County Democrats and as a precinct committeeman. From 2003-06, he was an emcee for the Cheyenne Little Theatre Players summer melodrama.
