Team History
The Air Squadron is the oldest of the volunteer units still in existence today. Records indicate a group of volunteer pilots and their aircraft was first formed in 1937 under the auspices of the Washoe County Sheriff for purposes of search and rescue. Statistical data concerning the numbers of searches was not maintained until recent decades, but we do know for a fact that the use of aircraft has helped to locate vehicles, campsites, and persons much quicker than conventional means.

The membership of the Air Squadron includes the owners and pilots of privately owned airplanes and trained observers. Many reports of missing or overdue persons may be vague such as a missing hunter "somewhere" north of Gerlach. The area of Washoe County "north of Gerlach" may encompass more than 3,000 square miles. A fixed wing aircraft can effectively and reasonably search this area, locate a vehicle or campsite and return to Reno even before ground units or vehicles can arrive in Gerlach. Typically, the Air Squadron would be utilized to locate a vehicle or campsite of a missing person, the ground units would begin a search from that location. Without the Air Squadron, locating the vehicle and/or campsite would be a very time consuming activity.
