Bisons of North America
Bisons of North America

Until the 19th century, as many as 60 million bisons lived on the Great Plains. They were central to the life of the Plain Indians, who used them as food and clothing. Even the dried dung, called buffalo chips, was used as fuel. At the end of the century, their number was reduced to about 1000 heads. Today, approximately 50000 bison live in protected areas and on ranches.

Tatanka Yotanka

Buffalos of North America
Chief Sitting Bull

Sitting Bull's Indian name was Tatanka Yotanka. He was born in the region of the Grand River, in present-day South Dakota around 1834. He was shot and killed by his captors in 1890, when friends tried in vain to rescue him. As War-Chief of the Hunkpapa-Dakotas, he was instrumental in the annihilation of the punitive expedition, led by Lt. Col George Amstrong Custer, in the now famous battle of the Little Big Horn.

He had several Indian names in his youth. French trappers called him "Blaireau Sauteur", Jumping Badger. The rumor goes, the same trappers also called him "Quatre Cornes", Four Horns. His last and most famous name was given to him one day on a big buffalo hunt, when he jumped on the back of a huge buffalo bull and killed him. The bull collapsed into a sitting position.

Air dried buffalo meat called Tatanka
Tatanka, air dried buffalo meat

An extremely healthy food. Buffalo meat is lower in fat and cholesterol than beef, pork, chicken, turkey and even halibut. Buffalo meat is also 98% fat free. Buffalos are the only land mammals that do not contract cancer. They actually carry a cancer-preventive enzyme. Grass-Fed Buffalo are higher in essential fatty acids with an excellent ratio of Omega-3s to Omega-6.

BUFFALO CANNOT CARRY the dangerous E-Coli Bacteria!

All Native Buffalos are Grass-Fed only. There is nothing added  to their diet, nor the processing, that would introduce chemicals, drugs, steroids, anti-biotics, etc.

Native Buffalo Meat is tender and slightly sweet in taste. There is NO wild game flavor . No wonder it is called, NATIVE PRIDE BUFFALO MEAT.

Letter to a President

TATANKA%20FOUR.jpgArtist Martha F.

Chief Seathl of the Duwamish Tribe of the State of Washington wrote to the President of the United States in 1855 regarding the proposed purchase of the tribe's land:

"The Great Chief in Washington sends word that he wishes to buy our land. The great Chief also sends us word of friendship and good will. This is kind of him, since we know he has little need for our friendship in return. But we will consider your offer, for we know if we do not do so, the white man may come with guns and take our land. What Chief Seathl says, the Great Chief in Washington can count on as truly as our white brothers can count on the return of the seasons. My words are like the stars-they do not set.

If I decide to accept, I will make one condition. The white man must treat the beasts of this land as his brothers. I am a savage and I do not understand any other way. I have seen a thousand rotting buffalos on the praries, left by white man who shot them from a passing train. I am a savage and I do not understand how the smoking iron horse can be more important than the buffalo that will kill only to stay alive. What is man without the beast? If all beast were gone, man would die from great loneliness of spirit, for whatever happens to the beast also happens to man. All things are connected. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the sons of the earth."
