Pet Boarding Can Be Fun

What happens to a much-loved, four-legged family member when its owner is traveling for business or pleasure? Going along on the trip or staying at home while its family is away may not be the best options. Pet boarding is an option that can actually be fun for a pet, if the owner takes some easy steps to prepare the pet for its stay. The following tips can reduce stress on both the pet and its family:

• A pet’s vaccinations should be up-to-date, and the owner should find out the requirements of the facility before checking in. An owner does not want to find out on the day of departure that he does not have the proper paperwork.

• A special toy or blanket from home makes a pet feel more comfortable while its owner is away.

• A nylabone or chew toy to keep him or her busy during down time. 

• For a pet that has never boarded before, a day care trial or an overnight trial visit to the facility will help the pet get used to the idea of being away from its family. During his/her stay, your pet will get to know the staff, have fun playing, enjoy plenty of treats, and maybe even get a manicure. When you return, your pet is reassured that he/she can have a good time, and you will come back.

When a pet owner works together with a boarding facility’s staff, a pet can have as much fun on vacation as his/her owner.

What to Bring:

• Your pet's regular diet.  We use Science Diet at our facility, but we recommend that you bring your own food to keep your pet on his/her regular diet.  Your pet will already have a certain degree of stress from boarding (even though it's fun), therefore, a change in diet can cause stomach trouble.  Please pack your pet's dry food in a large ziploc bag because it is easier for us to store.  Canned food is fine if that's what your pet is used to.  You don't need to pre-measure or pre-package, our staff will prepare according to your specifications at no extra charge.
• Any toys or treats that will make your pet feel more comfortable.
• A collar or harness for walking.  This item is a must!  No choke chains or prong collars please.
• Your vet records showing proof of Rabies, Distemper (DHLPC) and Bordetella - all within a year of your boarding date.  If you do not have a copy of your records, you can have your vet fax them to us.  Proof of vaccinations is mandatory for boarding - no exceptions for the safety of all of our guests.  There is a 48-hour wait period for Rabies and Distemper vaccinations, and a 14-day wait period for the Bordetella vaccination.  If your pet does not have the Bordetella vaccination, please be sure it is given 14 days prior to boarding.
