APA Supported Coordinator Positions

Federal Advocacy Coordinator
George Watson, PhD 

Ø       Is a member of the Legislative Committee.

Ø       Will attend the APA State Leadership Conference in Washington, DC, each year.    

Ø       Works directly with APA on issues of federal importance to psychology.

Ø       Responds to APA Action Alerts as required.

 

Diversity Coordinator

Ø       Will be appointed for a 3 year term by the board president.

Ø       Will submit articles for The Montana Psychologist.

APA Business of Practice Network Representative

Ø       BOPN is a network -- to stimulate advocacy in an area that is new to much of our membership and is a vehicle for exploring strategies to directly influence the marketplace.

Ø       One BOPN representative is appointed by each state psychological association and practice division. BOPN representatives either have experience or keen interest in using marketing and marketplace principles in shaping professional practice.  The BOPN meets approximately twice per year in Washington (expenses paid by APA), but much of the efforts are individual, accompanied by a great deal of written and online communication with the group.

 

Committee on Women in Psychology Network

Ø       CWP Network works to enhance women and women’s issues within APA by continued and consistent communication with Network members and working with input from members.

Ø       Responsibilities include coordinating APA’s efforts to ensure equal opportunity for women psychologists as practitioners, educators, and scientists and monitoring the welfare of women as consumers of psychological services.

 

Early Career Psychologist Network Representative
Hallie Banziger, PhD

ECPs are those psychology graduates who are in the first 7 years of their career following conferral of their doctoral degrees.  Early Career Psychologist Network (ECPN) communications will primarily occur via e-mail listserv. Information about initiatives being implemented by the CECP, opportunities available to ECPs, and ideas regarding increasing recruitment, retention, and involvement of ECPs in various groups are among the types of information to be shared.

There are some general responsibilities entrusted to state coordinators.  These can include:

Ø       Serving as the DRN contact person with APA, the Red Cross and other organizations.

Ø       Keeping the state psychological association up to date on your DRN activities.

Ø       Recruiting interested psychologists to take disaster mental health training and join the DRN program. 

Ø       Maintaining a current roster of contact information for state DRN members and alerting members to opportunities to provide disaster mental health services. 

Ø       Establishing a form of regular communication with state DRN members (e.g. e-mails, meetings, state newsletter column, etc.).

Ø       Developing and maintaining connections with the local Red Cross chapters and other local disaster relief organizations (local police and fire departments, state and local government disaster preparedness agencies, community mental health centers, etc.)  Please establish these relationships in advance of disasters.

Ø       Working with Red Cross chapters and service areas to coordinate the availability of ARC’s Foundations of Disaster Mental Health training and encourage psychologists to take the training. (APA offers 6.5 credits for this training.) 

Ø       Informing DRN members about training and conference opportunities.

Ø       Keeping in contact with APA’s DRN office to exchange news and information. (Please inform us of any state members who are mobilized to a disaster relief operation.)

Ø       Collaborating with DRN regional Advisory Committee member and DRN Office for guidance and assistance as needed.
