THE NEXT LEVEL
Transitioning Frontier Dental Practices from Entrepreneurships to Professionally Managed Firms
Practices that generate more than $1.25 million annually reach that leading-edge achievement through the attention, intention, commitment, tenacity and vision of their dentist-owners. It is no small feat. In fact, it is a remarkable accomplishment that should be acknowledged.
However, practices that reach that level often have a difficult time continuing their dynamic growth and profitability. Two barriers commonly exist. One is management. Managing staff in the same manner and model no longer generates high performance. Even having a great office manager doesn't seem to be effective at that revenue level.
The other barrier is other dentist-providers. At that higher level of revenue generation, there is typically an existing associate or partner -- or there is one being sought. The fact that 80% of those relationships fail is evidence that they are rarely set up appropriately -- and are often inadequately managed, leading to disappointment, distrust, and failure.
Over the last five years, with my unique background in practice management consulting – and organizational consulting with Fortune 1000 companies, hospitals and other corporate entities -- I have developed and successfully implemented a model for continual development and growth of high-end practices. [For Background of Experience see Client List, What Clients Say & What Doctors Say.]
Implementation of my model enables frontier practices to continue double-digit growth and financial success. An important step in implementing the model is working with select staff members and the dentist-owner to cultivate a Senior Executive Management Team. The Senior Executive Management Team takes on senior management responsibilities and assumes accountability for major portions of the practice. That frees the dentist to spend more time delivering care, more time marketing the practice, and more time developing leadership skills and developing associates or junior partners.
Another important step in the model is working with the dentist-owner and the employed dentist, associate or partner, or incoming associate to develop their relationship so it is synergistic and highly productive. Part of the effort is establishing effective "partnership" structures and developing the required mind-set of both parties for a powerful and successful partnership.
The model involves a one-year consulting engagement. It includes a one-day onsite meeting each quarter, two telephone discussions a month, homework (books, articles and online applications), and e-mail. The cost is $14,500, not including direct costs.
