The context of dental practice has changed.

In today’s rapidly shifting world of dentistry, solo private practice for many dentists might not offer the future of success and prosperity which was once the standard. What is working and clearly expanding in this new context is managed group practice and corporate dental enterprise.

There are a multitude of different breeds of Managed Group Practices. There are small local groups to very well-established large national groups. Nearly all are attracting significant capital investment and most are experiencing strong growth and rapid expansion.

There are a number of Corporate Dental Companies, also known as ‘retail’ dental enterprises, such as Aspen, Willamette and Gentle Dental. Corporate Dental Companies ordinarily service a different market than managed group practices.

Over the last few decades, dentists have capably made the leap from being well-trained technicians treating dental disease and improving esthetics to formidable individual owners, leaders and managers, able to run solo or small partnered practices as highly successful businesses.

But now that Managed Group Practice and Corporate Dentistry have taken center stage, the question becomes: Can dentists make the leap to become partners, corporate executives and directors able to consolidate and integrate dental practices to compete in this new context?
