Questions Following the Readings
Leadership Traits and Qualities

(Revised: Jan. 2007)

1.  One of the bases for Stogdill's conclusions that  "A person does not become a leader by virtue of some combination of traits." was that "...military leaders do not have traits identical to those of business leaders."  Do you agree or disagree?

-If you agree: Can you explain why the Wharton School and many major corporations take their aspiring business Leaders to Gettysburg to study the battle?
-If you disagree, what are some of the traits shared by both military Leaders and business Leaders?

2. Kirkpatrick and Locke give a list of "core" leadership traits.  Do you think they are the right ones to engender trust in followers?

3. Kirkpatrick and Locke call Charisma a "weaker supported" trait for civilians. Do you agree? Before you answer you might want to find out what "charisma" really is.

4. Stogdill, Lear, and Drucker say they do not believe that traits are important for leadership.  Is that what they really believe?  Why or why not?  What is their point?  Would they agree with Kirkpatrick and Locke about "core traits"?

5. How important do you believe a Leader's personal character or personal traits or qualities are in engendering the trust of the people of the organization?  In your view, which is the most important trait/quality that builds trust?  Why?

6. What traits do you possess that you believe will make people trust you?

7. Do you see any similarities between the situation faced by General Sullivan and that faced by Leaders of the Intelligence Community today?
