Mr. George Banin-Plockey

The Koforidua Sectech Network(KSN) called on an old Sectechan, Mr. George Banin-Plockey(GBP), for the featured interview which brought memories of the good old times to all of us.

KSN: Good morning Mr. Plockey. May we know the period of time you attended Sectech?

GBP: I was in Sectech from 1976 to 1981 from forms one to five.

KSN: Can you tell us what you liked about Sectech and why you chose to have your education there?

GBP: For SECTECH, and me, it was LOVE at first sight! The previous year I’d tried to get into GSTS – Takoradi, but couldn’t, so my old man, may his soul be blessed!, took me to Koforidua to see SECTECH. As soon as we drove through those gates I fell in LOVE, my first LOVE I could say, because I liked it so much, my first and second choices on the Common Entrance forms were SECTECH. So I studied hard that year to pass the exams from Burma Camp Kotoka Primary and I got into SECTECH. The experience has been the best part of my life till date!! I fell in LOVE with the school, buildings and everything else I saw on that faithful day. SECTECH is a great school and we've got to keep it that way!

KSN: So what extra curriculum activities were you involved in?

GBP: I was involved with the hockey team in a small way, and will never forget a tragic accident on the hockey pitch one afternoon with Akuffo-Boafo( H2R2). I was in the goal post, Akuffo whacked the ball with power and the damn thing flicked and hit me right there on the lips – ouch!! Was it painful or what? Much of the time, I resorted to getting drunk and raising hell during inter houses and inter colleges games…it was fun.
Running away to town and "Eredecs" on Saturday night was special to me. In the early years I was scared of doing it, but later on as a senior boy, it became a second nature, and even worse when I found love with one of the Koforidua “Flowers”. It became a ritual! Not only that, I broke my virginity at SECTECH with my Koforidua Flower! I loved every bit of it.
SECTECH! What a life?
For me, the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And one that I will remember forever, I will hate to forget the experience!
The experience prepared me for life in later years.
I couldn't have gone to a better school.
LONG LIVE SECTECH!!!

KSN:Did you hold any office on campus?

GBP: No, I was just a complete lawbreaker and I never contested for any post.
I was happy to just sit in the back and just play cool, or shall I say play the fool? aahh anything goes!

KSN: During your time in Sectech , which of the sporting activities did the school excell?

GBP: I cannot remember much now. Bear in mind its been some 21 years since I left SECTECH.
I remember though we did well in most games at regional level, we made noise any which way anyway, whether win or lose, so it seemed like we always won!

KSN:Have you visited the school recently or heard from others about the school?

GBP:The last time I visited the school was in the year 2000. I will be there this year (2002) too. On my last visit, I even gat the boys in my room (H2R2) to make SOAKINGS for me, we ate and fought over it, just like old the times! It was crazy, but I had a good time and enjoyed the visit.
There were a lot of changes in the teaching staff.
There’s an old boy FOLLEY, who is now teaching there. That’s a contribution to be respected, and it is my wish to do the same for the school one day as I plan to relocate back to Ghana.
The campus looked about the same, but it was horrifying to see the state of the dinning hall and the dormitories. The boys were sleeping 22 in a room as compared to 10 or 12 during my time. The dormitories need painting, the whole school, as a matter of fact, come on all you old boys and now girls out there, lets try and restore SECTECH to its former glory. It can be done, it means a lot of TEAMWORK!

KSN: SO what do you suggest, as an old boy, to help improve the conditions in the school?

GBP: Now that the school’s old boys association is springing up in Ghana, US, UK, Canada, and other parts, it is about time to put our heads together for some serious ground works to help SECTECH in any which way we can. It won’t be easy, but its not impossible to make SECTECH shine again.
I throw my towel in to help any
whichever way I can. I have just registered to be a member of the UK branch of SECTECHANS, I will join them in their efforts to make the school better. For instance we've got this website and the internet so communicating between various branches, members and the school itself should not be a problem.
We must do so effectively for a common goal. TOGETHER, EACH ACHIEVES MORE (TEAM WORK)!
I will also donate one computer to the school, when I visit it this year, and also help out should they need any help with their existing computers whilst I’m there.

KSN: Are you involved in any of the branches?

GBP: Yes, I have just registered as a member of the UK branch, and I will be part of their activities from now on. I will take this opportunity to make a far cry for all you SECTECHANS in the UK and elsewhere, please join US, come to our meetings, become members of this great old boys and girls association. Get in touch and get counted!
All hands on deck please!! Some people still don’t know about the existence of this website, so for those of you who know, please pass the message around.

Just off the records. Guys this website is a brilliant idea, since I found it, I’ve made contacts with a few guys I’d been looking for. We all had a marvellous time at SECTECH, well at least I did!
I was thinking if it will be nice to have "kiss and tell" column, where we can all relive those memories, one that quickly comes to mind is the SOWETO war. Remember KP and NJUASCO? Well, I got suspended through that war. So watch this space, I will tell my story and my life at SECTECH. If you have any such stories, feel free to post it up in the column and lets all hear about it. This will bring some humour to the site.

UNTIL SUCH TIMES, HAVE FUN, I remain GBP.

KSN: George, we thank you for your time.

GBP: It’s been my pleasure.

Thank you too for making this interview possible.

KSN:Guys we may call on you from time to time and will be glad to have our questions answered. We hope you will all take advantage of Koforidua Sectech Network to stay in touch with others.
