wines
2004 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Everyone knows that 2004 was a wonderful vintage here in the valley so it was fun to see what Gustavo was going to do with such great fruit. He chose to follow his classic, old-world style by fermenting in half ton bins, extending the maceration after fermentation to get every bit of color out of the fruit and then gently barrel aged the wine in French oak barrels. This is a house favorite, a well-rounded, smooth – almost velvety – wine with touches of dust, dark red fruits and just enough oak and tannin to make the flavors fill the mouth and linger.

wines
2005 Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon

Finally back to his Rutherford roots and grapes, Gustavo took great delight in creating this wine. He is proud to appellation designate this wine as it is 100% Rutherford Cabernet. The fruit was all from a single vineyard block of the Galleron Vineyards in Rutherford. We used a French yeast and put 60% of the juice into new French oak and 40% in one year old French barrels. The tannin structure of the Rutherford Cabernet is much tighter than the Atlas Peak appellation from where we sourced our Napa Valley Cabernet. This is a classic Rutherford Cabernet – great ‘dust’, tobacco, black licorice, cocoa and sweet red cherries fill your nose and mouth. There are mouth-filling tannins that beg for this to be served with a chunk of red meat. 250 cases produced.

Wine
2005 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

This is the first time that we have sourced Cabernet from the Atlas Peak area of Napa. This vineyard is at the base of Atlas Peak. We brought in 4 tons of fruit, producing just 240 cases. The harvest was interrupted by the rain that year so we harvested on two different days and then blended the finished wines together when they were both through fermentation. It was aged in new French oak barrels for 30 months. It is a big, fruit-forward wine. The lush nose opens up with aromas of cherry-cola, dark chocolate and licorice. There is a full mouth that finishes with just the right tannin management to leave your mouth dry but full of flavor, ready for the next taste. This wine will continue to improve in the bottle for the next 10 years.

wines
2005 Sauvignon Blanc

This Sauvignon Blanc has a balanced acid level that is refreshing and clean, finishing with the flavors of pears, yellow straw and honey. GustavoThrace loves what the Mohr-Fry Ranch is doing in the vineyard so much that we have been utilizing their fruit for 5 years. The fruit was harvested at 22.5 Brix. French yeast was added and the wine was fermented and aged in small stainless steel tanks to preserve the crispness.

wines
2005 Napa Valley Chardonnay Carneros

Of all of the styles a winemaker can choose from to produce a Chardonnay, we feel that this is the classic. The fruit was picked cold, whole cluster pressed, settled and racked and then just left alone to mature. 75% was aged in stainless steel and 25% was aged in new French oak. Upon opening the bottle it bursts with aromas of caramel, vanilla and hazelnuts. As you allow it to open up, new layers of tropical fruit and citrus are revealed. When you walk through the vineyard and pop these grapes into your mouth as you are sugar sampling all of these flavors are there and it is a delight to still find them in the wine. There was no malo-lactic fermentation done so the wine retains a high acidity and crispness that will allow it to age beautifully for the next 5-6 years.

wines
2006 Pinot Noir - SOLD OUT!

From the Russian River. Gustavo's son, Brendan, is a vineyard manager and this fruit comes from one of the vineyards he manages in the Russian River appellation. Having never worked with Pinot Noir before, we decided to just bring in just enough to make a single barrel of wine, so only 31 cases of this wine was produced. We liked how it turned out so well that in 2007 we increased the production to 100 cases. Still, a tiny production. This is a very unusual Pinot Noir, exhibiting a unique pattern of aromas not usually found in Pinot Noirs. There are raspberries and roasted cherries in the nose. The light color of the wine surprises with a big mouth finish. This wine pairs well with salmon and osso bucco.

wines
2006 Barbera

This fruit comes to us from the Sierra Foothills where the long, cold nights mean an extended ‘hang time’ to ripen the fruit. The grapes were bin-fermented and then left in the bins to extract everything we could before pressing out the wine into French barrels. Gustavo had never tasted a Barbera before this fruit came in and said he simply wanted to taste the fruit and juice to decide which yeasts and barrels he wanted to use to showcase the fruit. The results are a rich, juicy, mellow wine. There are aromas of ripe plums, spices and raspberry. This is a great wine for braised dishes as well as hearty pasta dishes.

wines
2006 Napa Valley Merlot

We are delighted to re-introduce our first Merlot in years. This fruit was sourced from two different vineyards in Napa, one on the valley floor and one in the Eastern hills of Napa. The wine was bin fermented with an extended maceration that gives a dark, rich color to the wine. The wine was aged in French oak, just 20% new so that the oak is softly integrated in the nose and mouth. This is a serious merlot… the aromas of dark red fruits, roses and well integrated oak lead into a mouth of full, rounded tannins and roasted cherries. The lingering mouth finishes with tobacco and dark chocolate. This wine really compliments the proteins in beans. Try this with dishes such as Carne Asada and beans, Cassoulet and, of course rare, grilled meats.

wines
2006 Petite Sirah

The last time we made a petite sirah was 2002 and we didn’t think we could get close to that huge wine. But, Gustavo has done it again. This is the first fruit off of the vines and we are overwhelmed with the intensity of such young fruit. The fruit was whole berry fermented and left on for a long maceration, extracting the dark, inky color that is so beautiful. This teems with cherries, cloves and an almost cocoa finish. This just begs for duck with a cherry sauce or slowly braised lamb shanks. 160 cases produced.

Wines
2006 Sauvignon Blanc

This is the sixth release of Sauvignon Blanc from the Mohr-Fry ranch in Lodi. As the vines get older in this block and the roots reach farther down into the earth we are seeing a greater minerality in the fruit. Gustavo balances the natural acids in the fruit with French yeasts and stainless steel fermenting. By not using any oak he stays true to the natural fruit flavors that this vineyard produces. This is a great wine for afternoon sipping, sushi, Asian foods and, our favorites, crab cakes and oysters.

wines
"The 3rd Bottle" Red Table Wine

The premise is that after you’ve opened a couple of really good bottles of wine, you shouldn’t be drinking your premium wines anymore but we always want to have just one more glass so The 3rd Bottle was designed to be that easy to drink, easy on the wallet wine that, we think, will also become your everyday wine. For this wine Gustavo made a blend of merlot, cabernet, barbera and a bit of petite sirah. It was aged in American oak for 18 months before bottling. It has a vibrant, spicy nose that shows layers of smoke, vanilla and cherries. It has a rich, full, smooth mouth with lingering hints of dark blueberry and tobacco. This is an extremely well-balanced wine with a lush mouth.
