2001 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

-
This classic Cabernet from Rutherford fruit is a tribute to Gustavo's childhood. Having grown up in Rutherford, he spent his formative years hanging out at B.V. where his father worked. To him, this is what Cabernet is SUPPOSED to smell and taste like. It is dark red with deep fruit aromas as well as hints of cassis, cherry, blueberry and vanilla. The sweet cherry mouth is followed by layers of tobacco and chocolate. The lingering tannins are well balanced by Gustavo's oak management. This big fruit was bin-fermented and then originally put into old French barrels for 2 1/2 years to develop the fruit and then moved to new French barrels for 8 months to enrich the oak integration. This is a trip down memory lane to those who remember the elegant, old-world style Cabernets made in the Napa Valley years ago.

2005 Syrah - 3 btl. Limit

-
This is the first release of Syrah for GustavoThrace. Gustavo was curious to work with the grape and this fruit is from the Coombsville area in south Napa. Just two barrels of the wine (51 cases) was produced. The grapes were fermented in bins and then aged in used French oak barrels until bottling. This is an unusual style for a syrah: not the big smoky, meaty style of the Rhone, but a softer, lighter very drinkable wine. It has aromas of cola, dried blueberries and summer herbs. There is a creaminess to the mouth that allows this to be a stand alone wine as well.

2005 Napa Valley Chardonnay Carneros

-
Of all the styles a winemaker can choose from to produce a Chardonnay, we feel that this is the classic. The fruit was picked cold, whole cluster pressed, settled and racked and then just left alone to mature. 75% was aged in stainless steel and 25% was aged in new French oak. Upon opening the bottle it bursts with aromas caramel, vanilla and hazelnuts. As you allow it to open up, new layers of tropical fruit and citrus are revealed. When you walk through the vineyard and pop these grapes into your mouth as your are sugar sampling all these flavors are there and it is a delight to still find them in the wine. There was no malo-lactic fermentation done so the wine retains a high acidity and crispness that will allow it to age beautifylly for the next 5-6 years. Only 250 cases made

2006 Pinot Noir - SOLD OUT!

-
From the Russian River. Gustavo's son, Brendan, is a vineyard manager and this fruit comes from one of the vineyards he manages in the Russian River appellation. Having never worked with Pinot Noir before, we decided to just bring in just enough to make a single barrel of wine, so only 31 cases of this wine was produced. We liked how it turned out so well that in 2007 we increased the production to 100 cases. Still, a tiny production. This is a very unusual Pinot Noir, exhibiting a unique pattern of aromas not usually found in Pinot Noirs. There are raspberries and roasted cherries in the nose. The light color of the wine surprises with a big mouth finish. This wine pairs well with salmon and osso bucco.

2006 Barbera

-
"Finders-keepers" is what we thought when this fruit was first presented to us. It comes in from the Sierra Foothills where the long, cold nights mean an extended 'hang time' to ripen the fruit. Lots going on in this wine. It was bin-fermented and then left in the bins to extract everything we could before pressing out the wine into French barrels. Gustavo had never tasted a Barbera before this fruit came in and said he simply wanted to taste the fruit to decide which yeasts and barrels he wanted to use to showcase the fruit. The results are a rich, mellow wine. There are aromas of ripe plums, spices and raspberry. This is a great wine for braised dishes as well as hearty pasta dishes. Only 200 cases produced

2006 Napa Valley Merlot

-
We are delighted to re-introduce our first Merlot in years. This fruit was sourced from two different vineyards in Napa, one on the valley floor and one in the Eastern hills of Napa. The wine was bin fermented with an extended maceration that gives a dark, rich color to the wine. The wine was aged in French oak, just 20% new so that the oak is softly integrated in the nose and mouth. This is a serious merlot….. The aromas of dark red fruits, roses and well integrated oak lead into a mouth of full, rounded tannins and roasted cherries. The lingering mouth finishes with tobacco and dark chocolate. This wine really compliments the proteins in beans. Try this with dishes such as Carne Asada and beans, Cassoulet and, of course rare, grilled meats.

2006 Petite Sirah

-
The last time we made a Petite Sirah was in 2002 and we didn't think we could get close to that huge wine. But, Gustavo has done it again. This is the first fruit off the vines and we are overwhelmed with the intensity of such young fruit. The fruit was whole berry fermented and left on for a long maceration, extracting the dark, inky color that is so beautiful. This teams with cherries, cloves and an almost cocoa finish. This just gegs for duck with a cherry sauce or slowly braised lamb shanks. Only 160 cases made

2006 Sauvignon Blanc

-
The 2006 Mohr-Fry Ranch Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from the same vineyard in Lodi that we have used for this wine since the 2000 vintage. Once again, this wine was fermented and aged in stainless steel to retain the crisp, clean tastes in the wine. The nose is wildly fragrant with aromas of fresh straw, kiwis and a hint of the tropics. It has an amazingly round mouthfeel for having been aged in stainless, a nod to Gustavo’s expertise in the cellar. There is a pronounced mineral/steel character to the finish on the wine that makes it the perfect wine to pair with soft goat cheeses, sushi, crab cakes and, especially, oysters. 500 cases produced.
Tasting Notes:
"Delightfully 'green' this new sauvignon blanc is from the same Lodi Mohr-Fry Ranch but exibits all of the characteristics of a 2006 vintage. This wine was fermented and aged in stainless steel, it is crisp, citrusy and has a wonderful full mouthfeel. Enjoy this with oysters, crab cakes and all things spicy."
