Jules Blake Click here to contact Dr. Blake or The Fusfeld Group. Dr. Jules Blake is a Senior Associate of The Fusfeld Group, consultants to industry in technology management and innovation. Corporate and Board Activities For many years, Dr. Blake was Corporate VP of R&D of Colgate heading the U.S. and overseas laboratories and pilot plants. New products developed during his tenure, include Colgate Tartar Control toothpaste and Fresh Start concentrated detergent. Since toothpaste is an OTC drug and subject to FDA regulation, he became heavily involved in toxicology and clinical testing, INDs and NDAs. After almost 15 years leading Colgate R&D worldwide, he took on the task of finding and bringing in external technology as VP Corporate Scientific affairs reporting to the Chairman. He was responsible for CP equity investments in biotech startups that resulted in outstanding profits for Colgate. Prior to Colgate, Dr. Blake headed the Automotive Finishes R&D group and led exploratory research for his Department at the duPont Experimental Station. Later, he was responsible for R&D of the Industrial Chemicals Group of Mallinkrodt, a specialty chemical and drug company. He was promoted to head all R&D at the Chemical Group, which included medicinal, food and cosmetic chemicals. From there, he became VP of R&D at the Kendall Company in Boston where he headed R&D on non-wovens, adhesives, adhesive tapes, pharmaceuticals, and hospital and surgical supplies and devices. When Colgate acquired Kendall, he moved to become VP of R&D. Following retirement from Colgate, he served 18 months in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy as the IRI Fellow, where he helped organize and manage the National Critical Technologies Panel and Report. After leaving the White House, Dr. Blake has continued his Board work; currently serving on the Boards of the Martek Biosciences Corporation, a development stage company producing chemicals and food additives from algae and the ProCyte Corporation, a pharmaceutical company involved in wound healing and hairgrowth by the use of short chain copper chelated peptides. He also serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of the International Specialty Products Corp., a specialty chemicals company involved in monomers and polymers for many industrial, drug, and cosmetic uses. He has consulted and advised companies and individuals on biotech start-ups and arranged corporate alliances. Consulting and Professional Activities On the pro bono front, Dr. Blake continues his involvement with oral health care by serving on the Dean’s Advisory Committee of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (he had served 12 years as a founding member of the Board of Overseers of the School of Dental Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania). He has also been appointed to the Board of Overseers of the Forsythe Dental Center in Boston, a leading dental research institution. He is on the Board of Directors of the Medical College of Pennsylvania and its Academic Affairs Committee as well as on the Advisory Board of the National Science Association of the University of Pennsylvania. On the venture capital front, he is on the Advisory Council of Oxford Bioscience Partners and consults for Colgate-Palmolive on biotech technology acquisition. He is also on the Scientific Advisory Board of Wellfleet Investments in Boston, a new fund involved with medical device and biotech tech transfer from universities and hospitals to pharmaceutical companies. Dr. Blake has worked and lectured on technology transfer, starting with du Pont and continuing to this day. In addition, he has worked on U.S. competitiveness and continues to be involved as a participant in conferences and meetings on this topic. He is a member of the Presidents Council, a group of Princeton area executives who meet on this and other business issues. Dr. Blake is a past President of the Industrial Research Institute (IRI), the professional group of VPs and Directors of R&D, whose 250 member companies do 85% of the industrial R&D in the U.S.. He continues to be active with this group as well as other professional organizations, such as the Directors of Industrial Research (DIR) of which he is past Chairman. Academic Background and Inventions Dr. Blake has his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania (where he did his B.S. in the Engineering School). At E.I. DuPont de Nemours where he worked on polymers and automotive finishes he was awarded an ‘A’ Bonus for his inventions and commercialization of ‘Lucite’ acrylic lacquer systems.
