Jan Cleveland is a Senior Associate of the Fusfeld Group, consultants to industry in technology management and innovation. Her expertise spans the areas of strategic planning, organization design, operations effectiveness, executive leadership, and team management. In addition, she is a practicing private Attorney.
She began her working life in 1974 as Southwestern Bell’s first female Installation Foreman, climbing telephone poles, working in cable vaults and leading crews of men who installed and repaired telephone systems. Following a variety of management assignments in “outside plant”, she was promoted after only three years and began developing and teaching new operations procedures for installers and repairmen to support the introduction of new technologies.
Jan was asked to join AT&T in 1980 as part of the team of high achievers from throughout the Bell system who were charged with developing and implementing the strategic and operational plans for AT&T’s divestiture of the Bell companies, While there, she:
- Planned and implemented new operations and reorganization steps for the residential, technical and customer service groups;
- Directed AT&T’s National Real Estate Development department which worked with all of the 22 Bell companies to negotiate property contracts and lease over 2200 Phone Centers and Business Offices throughout the U.S.;
- Lead an intercompany team (AT&T, WECo, ATC, and NTI) in streamlining the Design Line telephone repair process for a resultant annual savings to AT&T of $2.8 million;
- Developed an integrated market analysis/location planning process resulting in corporate annualized operations savings of $7 million.
Following divestiture in 1984, Jan joined U S West where she designed strategic and tactical plans to guide the corporation and a variety of its subsidiaries. She developed and taught courses on “Market Based Management” and acted as general “trouble shooter” to facilitate internal corporate change throughout U S West. She also redesigned and directed operations of U S West’s Staffing organization and its eight Career Centers, which provided counseling for the company’s 60,000 employees and implemented all company downsizing programs.
Since 1990, Jan also responded to requests from various high-tech companies to bring them her expertise as a Senior Associate with the Fusfeld Group. Clients have included, the University of Denver College of Law, Warner Lambert Inc., Generics Inc., Drackett Inc., Raychem, Export Acceptance Inc. and S.C. Johnson Wax Inc.
Jan received a BA in Education from West Texas State University in 1974 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Denver College of Law in 1992. Her publications include:
