Alignment with Current Methods for Managing Innovation Current methods for managing the innovation process are very effective. However, many companies have trouble at the point where an early stage innovation is being readied for its first management review. This is the review where the idea can get some additional resources. This training focuses on how to get the market based information that is required; how to get that information quickly and at little expense. The early stage we refer to is identified by different names. It is called: “The Fuzzy Front End”, “Front End Innovation”, “Stage One Innovation”, “Stage Zero Innovation”, or “The Beginning of the Pipeline”. At this stage, the idea is known and has passed some ranking criteria. A lot of technical information may already be available. Now, in many companies, preliminary market information is required, and initial consideration must be given to regulatory and proprietary issues and to the fit with the company strategy and strengths. Of these requirements, the market based information proves to be the most difficult to obtain. The bind occurs in companies where there aren’t resources available to get this information. Our experience is that people from Marketing, R&D, Information Sciences, and other functions become interested and good at getting this information. Anyone who likes early stage innovation, likes to solve problems, and likes to gather information is a good candidate.
