Alan R. Fusfeld is President and CEO of The Fusfeld Group, Inc., specializing in strategic development and technology management for corporations. Formerly, he was the founder of The Technology Management Group of Pugh-Roberts Associates, Inc., where he was also Senior Vice President and Director, 1975-1990.

Consulting Activities

Alan Fusfeld focuses on technology strategy, technology planning (alignment of technology plans with business plans), technology transfer, innovation effectiveness, R&D productivity, R&D metrics and corporate new ventures. He has contributed various papers and management techniques to these areas since 1969 when his first papers were published.

Fusfeld’s most recent papers were published in 2003. Over the last several years, his papers have focused on R&D metrics, the ‘technology value pyramid, ‘anchored scales’ for determining R&D project risk, and R&D portfolio optimization.

Some of his most important contributions include the technological progress function for forecasting, the technology planning framework for linking science to business, technology performance parameters, linking price/performance curves with technology substitution analysis, key expert panels, and the "black & white' theory of management dynamics. Most recently, he has developed global network theories for managing multinational laboratories, paradigms for external technology strategies and the 'strategic planning period' paradigm for technology strategy.

Alan Fusfeld has been a technology management and strategy consultant for over thirty years. His clients have been Fortune 500 corporations or their international equivalents. Assignments have included such companies as Alcan, Allen-Bradley, Amoco, Akzo, AT&T, British Petroleum, Corning Glass, DuPont, Eastman Kodak, ExxonMobil, Helene Curtis, ICI, Johnson Controls, JohnsonWax, MeadWestvaco, Monsanto, Motorola, Nabisco, Ralston Purina, US West, Warner-Lambert, and Weyerhauser.

Academic and Related Activities/Recognition

He has lectured extensively for clients and for various non-client groups such as the Industrial Research Institute (IRI), and from 1973-1990, at the MIT Sloan School Summer Session, "The Management of Technology, Development and Engineering". He works closely in support of IRI’s Research-on-Research Committee projects.

Alan Fusfeld received his B.E.S. degree in Mechanics from The Johns Hopkins University in 1970, and was a member of MIT’s Ph.D. Program in Management of Technology (1970-75), where his dissertation paper was entitled, "Market and Competitive Factors Affecting the Rates of Technological Change" which was partially published in 1973. Fusfeld is listed in Who's Who in American Finance and Industry, and is a past President of the Boston Research Directors Club.
