Consulting Activities
Dr. Chynoweth consults in the general areas of high-tech manufacturing, telecommunications, and formation of science and technology policy for industrial and governmental organizations.
Highlights of Experience
As one of the founders of Bell Communications Research (Bellcore), Alan Chynoweth had the unique challenge of designing from scratch and establishing essentially overnight a new type of Research & Development (R&D) organization focused on support of services rather than manufacturing. As Vice President for Applied Research at Bellcore (1984-1993), he led an organization of some 500 professionals responsible for all research undertaken by Bellcore for the seven regional Bell operating companies. This included telecommunications systems, services and applications as well as computer science, applied mathematics, materials and advanced electronics research.
Prior to this he spent many years at AT&T Bell Laboratories where he last led the development and introduction to manufacture of electronic and photonic devices as Executive Director of the corresponding division. Earlier responsibilities at Bell Labs included managing materials science and engineering, especially the development of low-loss optical glass fibers for the former Bell System, and various fundamental research activities.
Principal other activities have included National Academy of Sciences committee work on materials science; consulting to NATO on materials and other advanced studies; consulting to the White House panel on high-performance computing and communications; membership in academic advisory boards (Cornell, University of California at Berkeley, University of Southern California, and University of Pennsylvania); advisory work in various R&D management and consulting organizations (The Conference Board, American Management Association, Industrial Research Institute).
He is the author of more than sixty technical articles, holder of eleven patents, coeditor of the book “Optical Fiber Telecommunications”, writer of numerous committee reports of national scope and frequent keynote speaker on subjects ranging from telecommunications to management strategies.
Alan is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and has received their W. R. G. Baker Prize in 1967 and their Philips Award for R&D Management in 1992. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the recipient of their 1992 George E. Pake Award for R&D Management. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (London).
A native of the United Kingdom, Alan Chynoweth has a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of London King’s College and has residences in Summit, NJ, USA and Chichester, England.
