Colorful, Highly-textured, Hand-felted Accessories of Hand-dyed Wool, Permanently Moth-proofed

In the immortal words of "Singin' in the Rain" screen star, Lina Lamont,

"If we bring a little joy into your humdrum lives, it makes us feel as if our hard work ain't been in vain for nothin'."

Ruth Walker, Feltmaker is a collection of colorful hand-felted hats, pin cushions, balls, and various hand-rolled scarves and runners made of virgin wool. Felting since 1992 with sales in select galleries sweeping from the east coast through to the west.

Fleeces are selected from sumptuous wool raised for discriminating handspinners, scoured, permanently mothproofed, and extravagantly colored with dyes of excellent wash- and light-fastness. Natural wool colors (silver-gray, dark and light browns, moorit) are also featured.

Some fleeces are chosen for the body of the felt (Merino, Romney, Blue-faced Leicester), while others (Wensleydale, Blue-faced Leicester, Lincoln) contribute interesting locks for embellishment. Unspun silk, mohair locks and various fabrics as well as handspun and commercial yarns may also be felted in.

Care directions are included with each item on an instructive laminated tag.

All items are spot or hand-washable; balls are machine washable and dryable. Each item is individually constructed and as such is unique.

It is the nature of wool to be water-resistant. The hats will shed water in the rain before they would ever soak through, without water-proofing agents. They also hold and return to their shape very readily, so can be crushed in a suitcase. There are no standard fronts or backs on the hats; they can be worn in any suitable direction.

Hats are approximately women's medium (22"), but could be specified. Color combinations may be suggested in the order.

Descriptions and 2006 Retail Prices

  • A Brim with a Twist ........retail $325

First prize "Hat," 2002,3,4, and 2005 Taos Wool Festivals. Several styling possibilities. The brim may be worn up or down in any desired adjustment; the hat-band may also be worn around a collar. Looks great on practically everyone. It is the nature of wool to be water-resistant and the hats will shed water in the rain before they will ever soak through, without water-proofing agents. They also hold and return to their shape very readily. There are no standard fronts or backs on the hats; they can be worn in any suitable direction.

  • Sproing! (new)........... retail $40-$70

Exuberant hat-band or collar embellishment, the hand-spun 2 oz skein of yarn may now be purchased as a separate accessory.
Fine Montana Targhee wool with lots of bounce....$40
Merino or other fine wool blends for softness....$45

  • Well, Bowl Me Over! or, Brim With A Flip.........retail $285

This beautifully embellished brimmed hat has a beautifully embellished turned-up brim to frame your face. The brim is adjustable: Wear it all up, all down, halfway up and down, and perhaps with an attitude. It is the nature of wool to be water-resistant and the hats will shed water in the rain before they will ever soak through, without water-proofing agents. The hats will also hold and return to their shape very readily. There are no standard fronts or backs on the hats; they can be worn in any suitable direction.

  • I love a beret! ...................retail $165

A beautifully embellished four ounce beret, to be worn as desired to attractively set off the face.

  • The Hand-felted Purse ........ retail $400

First prize "Purse," 2002 Taos Wool Festival. The Hand-felted Purse contains two pockets perfect for cell phone & glasses, & a small pocket at the bottom. The body is large enough for a plethora of stuff. Tie the cords in 2 decorative knots to carry as a clutch, or extend one or both cords to wear the purse over the shoulder. Order with a hat & a scarf for a matched ensemble. Firmly felted to resist abrasion. This is a wonderful purse. Approximately 6 oz.

  • Flat Felt Pocket on a Self-Tie Cord .........retail $150

Strong and deep enough to contain your keys, yet still lie flat against you. Roomy enough for a coin purse and business cards. The hidden side cuts allow ready yet discrete access. Glasses or cell phone may be inserted through the top.

  • Pleated Felt Pouch on a Self-Tie Cord ....... retail $175

The same style as the Pocket, with pleated sides, but with no slits. Great for the smallish things for a special occasion. With an integral pocket for holding glasses and cell phone!

Knit Cord… About 48" long and thus hangs about two feet from the shoulder. Either bag may be worn over the near or far shoulder, or for security tied around the waist. When tied around the waist, the side cuts of the pocket allow ready access to your keys, very much like a pocket. The "cord-within-a-cord" structure retains elasticity while reducing overstretching; felt buttons prevent the cord from separating from the pocket or pouch.

As a yurt (or "ger" as it is properly called) it houses people in Mongolia, and should do well by your tea. Strong, convenient, and colorful. Felt button is E-Z-to-grab protuberance. Approximately 5 oz. Stands on its own. 11" high by 8" wide, or 8" high by 11" wide, or 7" high by 10" wide.

Made of Merino wool or Merino wool and silk and integrally embellished with coordinating yarns. Hand wash; lay flat to dry.

  • Pebble Pincushions ............retail $30

Richly decorated with locks and yarns, the pincushion is at least three ounces of solid wool felt with a generous surface area, shaped and dimpled to sit flat. Each contains a complement of pearlized pins.
