Workshops and Demonstrations
Yes, here I am at the end of a successful felting or dyeing teaching session. For even greater accuracy you could imagine that I have graying hair in a bun and am wearing, among other things, Birkenstock sandals and a full frontal apron in the pattern of a blue pinstriped suit with a pink shirt. The smile is completely accurate, of course, and is a reflection of the smiles of the workshop participants.

2008 Upcoming Workshop Sessions:

  • Five Intense Afternoons of Felting with the fibers class of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. 2-6 June 2008. Contact Professor Laura Strand for details.

  • "Hats & Purses on the Ball", 17 & 18 June 2008 (pick one or two days satisfyingly intense felting) just after the Estes Park Wool Market, at The Studios of Bristol along the "Silver Highway" above Creede, Colorado. Contact Teri Inman to register.

  • Five Days O' Felting: Intensive 5-day introductory wet felting workshop at the Eureka Springs School of the Arts, 7-11 July 2008, Eureka Springs, Arkansas.

  • Roll a Ball, Felt a Purse! Intensive 1-day wet felting workshop with 2-d and 3-d resists at the Midwest Felting Symposium, 23-27 July 2008, in Madison, Wisconsin.

  • Goldilocks and the Numerous Indigo Solutions: Eight Fibers, Five Variables and the Lye-Thiox Stock, or Studies in Indigo: Cellulosic & Protein Fibers, 20-24 August 2008 at Prochemical and Dye in Fall River, Massachusetts.

  • "Hats & Purses on the Ball", 1st & 2nd of October 2008 (pick one or two days satisfyingly intense felting) just prior to the Taos Wool Festival, at the Espaņola Valley Fiber Arts Center between Santa Fe and Taos in New Mexico. Contact Espaņola Valley Fiber Arts Center 325 Paseo de Oņate Espaņola, NM 87532 (505)747-3577 info@evfac.org for information, as it is not yet listed on their calendar.

    Some past workshops given:

  • Mid-Atlantic Fiber Association Conference: Beyond Basics, July 12-17, 2005. I'll be holding workshops on hat, purse, and various introductory felting techniques as three separate sessions of three-dimensional felting from July 15-17. Bring your elbow grease!

  • Three Days of 3-D, 11-13 May 2005 at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. Sixteen to 20 Fiber Arts students will learn the ramifications of fiber choice and orientation in three-dimensional felting. Contact: Dr. Laura Strand.

"Five Days O' Felt" at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, May 14-18 2004. Balls, pincushions, hats, purses, laminated/nuno and fine felt scarves for 19. Contact Dr. Laura Strand.

  • Midwest Weavers "Fiber Fantasia" Conference, "Get on the Ball: Felt a Hat!" Saturday Maxi-session workshop, 28 June 2003. Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville. I must in all fairness report the results tallied from the evaluation forms from the class participants. The workshop was uniformly rated 'excellent' in the following categories: 'This class met or exceeded my expectations,' 'This instructor was knowledgeable about the subject,' 'The instructor was well-prepared,' and 'I would recommend this class to a friend.' (And there weren't any other categories, actually.) Written comments included, "I got it done!," "Super," "Instructor made this class fun as well as educational.," and "I had a great time." (I must say, so did I!)

Workshop and Demonstration topics in felting and dyeing currently include:
    • 'Get on the Ball: Felt a Hat!'
    • 'Get on the Ball: Felt a Purse with Pockets'
    • 'Fine, Hand-rolled Felt Scarf or Table Runner'
    • 'Flat Felt Pocket on a Self-tie Cord'
    • 'Make Your Own Great Ball O' Felt'
    • 'Felt Your Own Pincushion'
    • 'The Magic and Mystery of Indigo Dyeing'
    • 'Wash-fast Acid &/or Sabraset Dyes for Protein Fibers'

Terms are very generally as follows: $275 per 6-8 hr workshop. $80 per 1-2 hr demonstration. (Elementary school rate significantly lower.) $100 deposit. Materials and travel expenses extra. Please contact me for further details.
