Finding luxury on the Lost Coast
The Cliff House at Shelter Cove is a new, worthy vacation
spot on Northern California's Lost Coast, where coastal
Highway 1/101 passes 30 miles inland through Garberville and
Redway. Shelter Cove struck us as a well-kept secret --
unspoiled coast reached by a spectacular 30-mile drive from
Redway through the King Mountain National Conservation area.
Redwood giants form the edge of the road, which winds up to
4,000 feet in about 3 miles through an area teeming with
wildlife.
With the expanse of the Pacific starting 90 feet below, and
coastal scenes where the King Mountain Range meets the sea, we
found quiet luxury at the new hotel.
Shelter Cove has an airstrip, a black sand beach and
restaurants within walking distance of the Cliff House.
Roosevelt elk and deer graze in the highlands just above the
beach, and in the evening we saw little kit foxes from our
deck. In season, whales swim 100 yards from shore.
The Cliff House units are clean and well furnished. They
include a large living-dining room with gas fireplace and TV
with VCR and DVD player, a large bedroom with queen bed and
bath, and a well-equipped kitchen. A comfortable sofa bed
provides additional sleeping room. Rates are $139 to $149.
