Simple, straightforward parenting advice and helpful tips from Dr. Phelan's best-selling parenting programs.
Kids can sometimes surprise you with the comments they make. Before jumping in with advice or discipline, sometimes it's more important to listen first. For starters, get yourself in the proper frame of mind: "I'm going to hear this kid out—even if it kills me—and find out exactly what he thinks and feels about what's going on." Next, several different things can be done. These include openers, nonjudgmental questions, reflecting feelings and perception checks.

Child Care Provider's United
-
The California Department of Education (CDE) will be rewriting the regulations governing how alternative payment agencies (APs) reimburse child care providers.
We wanted to make sure that CDE hears from as many child care providers as possible about how the system has been working and how the process of delivering subsidy payments can be improved.
The information will be used to put together a short memo summarizing providers' experiences and highlighting areas to address in revising payment regulations.

Subsidized Child Care Programs
The Subsidized Child Care Program is designed to provide full or partial child care payments on behalf of eligible families while their parents continue their employment, job search, education or training.
Some programs also serve children at risk of abuse or neglect who are referred for protective services. Childcare is by parental choice in a Licensed Family Child Care Home, Child Care Center, Licensed-Exempt/Registered Provider or In-Home Care Provider. Eligibility is based on need and income.
Some Programs operate from a waiting list.

Crisis in the Kindergarten
New research shows that many kindergartens spend 2 to 3 hours per day instructing and testing children in literacy and math—with only 30 minutes per day or less for play. In some kindergartens there is no playtime at all. The same didactic, test-driven approach is entering preschools. But these methods, which are not well grounded in research, are not yielding long-term gains. Meanwhile, behavioral problems and preschool expulsion, especially for boys, are soaring. Read and comment on the Alliance’s new report, Crisis in the Kindergarten, why children need to play.
