Our Background

About Us

Founded about AD 1075, the Pueblo (Sky City) is considered the oldest continuously occupied settlement in the USA, and is a National Historic Landmark.
Eighty miles (approximately 45 minutes west of Albuquerque) on Interstate 40, off the old Route 66 lies Acoma Pueblo, on top of a huge monolith, about 360 feet above the high plateau. The Pueblo was discovered by the Spaniards in 1540, and conquered by Vasquez de Coronado, Conquistador par excellence, in 1599. Not completely subdued, the residents of Acoma took part in the great pueblo rebellion of 1680.
The tribal name is derived from the Keresan word AKOME, meaning "People of the White Rock". As great potters, Acoma craftsmen and craftswomen made a name for themselves in the indigenious pottery world. Their art is shown on this site. Some more will follow soon.
