In the history of mankind, clans have played an important role in the makeup of tribes, their economical and political structure and their influence in the making of war and peace. The same applies to the pueblo tribes of the American Southwest, where the lineage of tribal members depends on their mothers tribal kinship. All descendants take on their mother clan heritage, and therefore, the identity of their own family. Clanship is all about people, family ties and the feel of security and belonging. Being a matriarchal society, some Acoma clans have died out, or were absorbed by other clans or tribes, however 12 still exist.(Sun, Antelope, Eagle, Bear, Pumpkin, Corn, Water, Mustardseed, Oak, Parrot, Turkey, Roadrunner). The Watchempino's are member of the Sun Clan. Many Acoma Indians belong to this clan and have established themselves in many professions, as well as artisans in the local pottery and design market.
