Whenever we think of the word "tumor" it is not abnormal to think the worst possible situation. It is very important to realize that tumors can be either "benign" or "malignant". A benign tumor or growth is one that does not pose a threat of spreading through the body and possibly resulting in a terminal or life threatening situation. These types of growths can however grow in size depending on their origin and develop into something that may impair ones normal functions.

"Malignant" tumors on the other hand, are growths which have the capability of spreading to other areas of the body resulting in possible life threatening situations. There are many types of tumors that affect different areas of the body with differing results. It is also very important to remember that many tumors can look the same to the naked eye and diagnosing a particular condition without proper histologic examination may lead to an incorrect diagnosis.

Oncology has become a very interesting and treatable condition in veterinary medicine. For treatment to be effective and proper, it is important to know exactly what we are dealing with to afford the pet the best possible outcome. Unfortunately, all situations do not end favorably, but with the proper diagnostics and protocol, the chances of success are much greater.

It is also important to remember, that regardless of whether a tumor is benign or malignant, the sooner that it is excised and removed from the body, the greater the chance that this growth will not reoccur. THE SOONER WE DEAL WITH IT, THE BETTER OFF WE WILL BE.

Because of this, it is de la Houssaye Animal Hospital's belief and practice to recommend excisional biopsy of growths. By doing this, we can obtain as much information as possible to be sure your pet is treated in the best way possible. It is our experience that needle biopsies are not as accurate, although very useful at times, to diagnose a condition. Obviously, each situation must be treated accordingly and based on the presenting situation. de la Houssaye Animal Hospital would be happy to discuss any questions or concerns you may have about your pet.

THE ABOVE INFORMATION IS NOT MEANT TO DIAGNOSE A PARTICULAR CONDITION BUT ONLY TO HELP EDUCATE THE PUBLIC. OPINIONS MAY DIFFER BETWEEN VETERINARY HOSPITALS.
