Canine Separation Anxiety Canine Separation Anxiety is a common disorder that many dogs suffer from. Until recently, signs associated with this disorder were considered "normal". This is now known to be untrue. There are reasonable treatments now available. Signs of separation anxiety are: 1. Barking (vocalization) 2. Soiling (urinating or defecating in unacceptable areas of the house) 3. Destruction by digging or chewing 4. Any other abnormal behavior that takes place only when the family dog is seperated from members of the family It is important to remember that these signs are not only for separation anxiety. Other conditions could exist and that is why your veterinarian should be consulted before forming a diagnosis The above signs usually surface when the pet is left alone A new drug named "Clomicalm" is now available for the treatment of separation anxiety. This medication is not meant to be used without some form of retraining of the pet in question. As with all medications used for behavior modification, it is important that the right diagnosis is made and that every effort is made to try and accomplish satisfactory behavior so that medication is no longer needed.
