The Appaloosa Horse Club was founded to "preserve, improve and standardize the breed of horses known as Appaloosa". This organization has done much for the Appaloosa, however it still allows crossbreeding so an ApHC "Appaloosa" is not necessarily the product of intense Appaloosa to Appaloosa breeding as found in our horses.
This page contains George Hatley's summation of the results of an ApHC survey done in 1950. From the survey came an official description of the Appaloosa breed "type" and characteristics. This "official type" is the kind of horse that we strive to produce.
