About Us And NorthStar Appaloosas
-
NorthStar Appaloosas is operated by Kyle and Sue Magnuson (2KS- NorthStar) and our daughter and son-in-law, Karisa and Larry Larsen, (LK- NorthStar). We enjoy the challenge and satisfaction of producing quality foals and the fun of trail riding. Most all our adult horses are broke to ride and take their turn on the trails. Trail riding is not only one of our favorite pastimes, but it also helps us know the abilities of our horses so we can make better decisions in our breeding program.
Why purchase your next horse from us? Because we strive to match horses and owners - a good home for our horses with satisfied owners is our main concern. Our foals are handled from birth and have a very people-oriented disposition. They come from trail-proven backgrounds and famous foundation bloodlines. Appaloosa versatility means they can be successful as trail horses, show horses, or family companions. And we insure owner satisfaction that our horses are as represented.
The sections below provide further information about us, and our goals. There are three categories in this section: "Principles", "Breeding Program" and "Location".

Principles

Mission-Vision-Values

2KS Mission
"To preserve and concentrate ApHC Foundation bloodlines, by producing people-friendly Classic Appaloosas with a refined Foundation Appaloosa appearance and the ability to perform well in a variety of disciplines. Foundation bloodlines, Appaloosa color and the Indian Shuffle are integral parts of our program".
Note: we use the term "Classic Appaloosa" to describe horses whose breeding is based primarily on ApHC Foundation stock. "Foundation Appaloosa appearance" is one that generally resembles the ApHC "Phippen Horse" model.
2KS Vision
2KS will work with other breeders to promote the Classic Appaloosa, while continuing to improve the quality of our horses by selectively breeding Appaloosa to Appaloosa with an emphasis on Foundation bloodlines. We will raise horses having traits consistent with the original Foundation Appaloosas; making them outstanding trail horses that also have the conformation, mind, and natural ability suitable for a variety of performance disciplines. The smooth riding Indian Shuffle gait will be another Appaloosa characteristic found on an increasing number of our horses.
2KS Values
Integrity in all our activities and dealings with others Humane treatment of horses Continuous learning and improvement Respect for others and other viewpoints Fun!

Breeding Program

Our Goal

As stated in our "Mission", the focus of our breeding program is to produce quality horses that have a refined "Appaloosa appearance", as generally defined by the ApHC "Phippen Horse" model.
We breed for recognizable Appaloosa traits and conformation, with an emphasis on those that promote soundness, stamina and smooth gaiting ability. We look for:
- a head in proportion to the rest of the body
- a neck that ties in somewhat high into the shoulder
- a level, moderate length back / top-line
- well-defined withers
- correct body and leg structure for soundness and smooth gaits
- good feet with good-sized, hard hooves
- recognizable Appaloosa color
- and above all a willing, people-friendly disposition.
The smooth riding Indian Shuffle gait is an Appaloosa characteristic that we breed for as a secondary objective.
With all this in mind, we use the Ulrich leopard lines as the core of our breeding program, plus select individuals from the Toby lines and several complementary leopard lines including Starbuck Leopard, Morgans Leopard, Navajo's Candy, and Siri Sheik.
Appaloosas are not our livelihood, but we consider it our responsibility to help insure the integrity and quality of the breed. To that end, we carefully select our breeding stock from among the best Appaloosas and Appaloosa bloodlines. We evaluate breeding results, and utilize limited line breeding to help set desirable characteristics and consistently produce quality Classic Appaloosa foals.

Location

Description of the area (Lyon County, Southwest Minnesota)

2KS- NorthStar Appaloosas is along US Highway 59, north of Garvin, Minnesota. It is located on hilly terrain; with pasture, trees and a small creek. Nearby is a large park with public horse trails, featuring several good hills and river crossings.

LK– NorthStar Appaloosas is located near the junction of MN Highway 23 and US Highway 14, just outside of Florence, Minnesota. It features nice open pasture and nearby hay fields. Parks with horse trails can be found a short distance both East and West.

Once spring arrives, our foals spend much of their time outdoors in the pastures. They get plenty of exercise and at this time become familiar with water crossings, brush, and other obstacles they may later encounter as a riding horse. Due to our being alongside major highways, they also become quite comfortable with the noise of automobiles and semi-trucks.
