Subject Indian Shuffle Gait

Date Fri Aug 31 2001 09:47

Author Heather Kae (eagleheather@yahoo.com)

After over a year of searching Wa. State for a shuffling Appy (hardly anyone knew what I was talking about, or said the gait was purely fiction!)purely by chance I found a mare in Idaho with the shuffle gait the owner wasn't even aware of.
I was disturbed to see you mention one of your horses 'Grew
out of' the shuffle. Maumin is a four year old, so is the shuffle likely to remain? She is green broke, is there
anything I can do to encourage it? Any help greatly appreciated, Heather Kae
ps She GREATLY resembles your Stallion Cowboy. So much so in fact, that I checked his lineage for relations!

I find that the best gaiters are of the pure Nez Perce Appaloosa breed , most commonly found in the Ulrich lines. I have a Nez Perce stallion and every foal so far is gaited. I have only bred him to Appaloosa mares and will not brred any other breeds to him as I try to promote the true Appaloosa. So Far all are gaited. I hope this information helps !

I had a stallion that would do the shuffle that you guys are talking about. I wonder if you have heard of him, for we have sold him. And I was just wondering where he might have gotten to. His name is LL Quintas KOKO # 447906. If you have any info on him, I would love to hear from you.

I do not have any information on LL Quintas Koko, but I just recently bought a filly that is his grand-daughter from her dam's side. She is a lovely buckskin, but from what I can tell, she does not have the shuffle gait. Which surprises me, because her sire does the shuffle and her dam is from this LL Quintas Koko, who apparently is a shuffler also.
Is the shuffle always apparent at birth?

Hi Sandy, We emailed you a while back but forgot to post here too. From what little we've seen (and heard from others) foals will often display a lateral walk that some may mistake for shuffling. The difference is that these foals are indeed walking and not gaiting at any speed above the walk. On the other hand, we have seen a horse shuffle when older that we had not noticed shuffling when young. Not sure if we missed it or if it was due to conformational changes that favored the shuffle as the horse got older.

Author Kyle (kasm@mnns.com)

Hi Rhonda. Sorry for the delay in response. We have had some PC problems, but we hope to update the web site soon.
Anyway if you are wanting to know how to tell if a horse is shuffling, watch a pair of diagonal legs as the horse moves at a speed between the walk and canter. If the legs are not in time such that the horse's gait has foor distint hoof beats versus the two beats of "trot-trot" then the horse is likely in some type of shuffling gait. More information about the various gaits can be found on our web site. You can get there from the main menu by going to "Classic Appaloosas" and then clicking on one of the articles about gaits. In regard to starting a shuffler and encouraging the gait, there are several things that can be done, but the basics are the same and to some degree it depends on the horse and its conformation. Was this the information you were looking for?

PS- we've seen the recent pictures of Savannah and she's looking really nice!

Just wanted to let you all know that Ladybug is doing fine down here in New Mexico. In fact she is QUEEN of the pasture. I've been hoping to get her to a few local shows, but every time I start, some thing happens like a fire call. Maybe over the winter I'll be able to get her to a few local open shows.
Looking forward to seeing the new foals. I might be interested if the dun snowcap filly is for sale.

Subject british versus canadian appaloosas

Date Mon Aug 30 2004 09:37

Author Anne (eahotson@hotmail.com)

Went to our northern show yesterday. Saw Canadian appaloosa there which was definately a different type to ours. Was told that Canadians breed very true to type.I have an appaloosa though which although unregistered looks like an old faishoned type appaloosa. Our more modern ones are moving towards sports horse type.I bought mine for his gentle and very genuine temperament. To British non appaloosa eyes appys look a little strange. Legs close together in front, not huge paces and small. What do you think of the advantages of the canadian appaloosa oh! and are they suitable, with training for British style dressage? Cant find a western trainer near me.

Author Kyle (kasm@mnns.com)

Hello Anne,

I tried to email you earlier but perhaps it didn't go through? Anyway, we are not too knowledgeable with dressage. But we know the foundation type Appaloosas like you describe seem to fair better than the modern crossbred types in that discipline. Regarding some of the traits you mention, we do see most (but not all) of our horses being somewhat narrow (we prefer this for trail riding) and most would be considered small by dressage standards (most 15.2 or less)- once again we like this size for trail riding and western performance events. On stride, our horses will have average, square strides or longer strides with overreach.

So I guess with what know of, the right foundation type Appaloosa should do well...

Take care,
Kyle

Subject shipping foundation semen to new zealand

Date Thu Oct 13 2005 22:29

Author sandi (sandi@raglan.co.nz)

Enter your message here. A friend and I are just getting in breeding appaloosa here in new zealand,so far we have three mares. We are hoping to import foundation stock semen into nz and upgraded our breeding stock. We are hoping to get a line black based. My friend dreams of a black blanketed appaloosa running around his paddock.Would any of you know which of the many bloodlines you have, would be the better one for us to start with. Our mares all are outcrossed with either quater horse or thoroughbred blood 2rd or 3rd generation but we are hoping to pick up a black filly who is outcrossed 4th generation back so she will be graded C here and with 100% pure foundation semen we will be able to bred a B grade and then hope for another filly and cross her with foundation semen and get the first A grade appaloosa here in nz. At the persent the highest grade we have is B and was imported from the USA. The woman that brought them in is keeping her stock and not let them outcross with the local population. We want to have the height no more than 15.1hh and black with blanket but if the blanket is asking too much just to get that black base colour that isn't going to roan out to a white horse with varnish marks. As we seem to have alot of this type here already. If there is information that could help us in our dream please let me know and I will check it out. Do you ship semen? I think your stallion is just the most elgant creature I have seen in a long time. His foals are lovely also. Keep up th good work.

I have an Appaloosa which is Grandaughter of the two-year international all-around horse (2 years) Rugged Lark and I believe she's very rare because Rugged Lark's owner (I was told) did not want the Lark line bred with Apaloosa's. I've been led to believe my girl (Tokens Silver Lark)could be the only one. Her Sire is Lieutenant Lark. Has anyone out there seen or heard of a Rugged Lark Appie before? I haven't found one on line.

You know, it has been three years since I stumbled upon Casper on your website and I have to say I was afraid he was too good to be true, really! He was everything I was looking for to raise up as a stallion prospect, but you were so very far away and he was so young. But after trying to contain myself for months, I finally contacted you that winter and I have been so blessed ever since - with your integrity, with Casper, with the joy and pleasure he brings us and with the fond knowledge of a friendship that will last for a very long time!

Thank you so much for the chance to own this very special boy who has been a pleasure to show, ride, train and be my PAL!!

Sincerely,
Carrie Giannandrea, owner and companion to NorthStar Casper!

PS, you like that photo so much, I attached one for you!

Subject forgotten ones!!

Author Shari Querio (friendshipfarms_@hotmail.com)

Hi You dont know me Im Shari (Rella) Querio I live in Washington state just north of Spokane Last spring at a cattle auction yard I bought an Appaloosa stallion (a Goer son out of a Te N'Te mare) He earned halter points he stood at stud for several years (28 registered foals) He was going to the killers. He was 300 lbs or so underweight, bald and in just terrible condition. Im not a sappy person, but Im almost crying now telling you about him. How did such a fine horse as he end up in a place like that? Didnt he EARN a good retirement and health care until he died? I saw your website and some of the fine animals that you breed and show and sell. You dont know where they will be in 20 years.
Im asking for a one time donation to help this horse and the many others I have like him I know how you and many other horsepeople are feeling the financial crunch just now. Anything will help, no amount is too small. The horses will stay on my farm (120 acres) until they die or in some instances find another home. I am not an official horse rescue Im nobody I just care about the horses that were bred and used and then thrown away. Please help the horses that no one remembers We have over 60 head now I bought one horse out of the kill pen that belonged to a famous country western singer and actor!! I have an old mare (34) that I took cause her owner couldnt keep her. I pay for everything out of my pocket As a horse person you know how much worm medicine and farriers cost Most of the horses are old or debilitated in some way My vet bill is astronomical I need a lot of specialized feed Think about your own horses and see if you can find it in your heart to help these forgotten ones!!
